EXTENDED COOKIE POLICY

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that the websites visited by users send to and store on their devices (computers or mobile devices), and which are then sent back to the same websites on the next visit. Through cookies, the website remembers the user's actions and preferences (for example login details, chosen language, various display settings, etc.) so that they do not have to be entered again when browsing between pages of the site or during subsequent visits. Cookies are therefore used to perform authentication in restricted areas of websites, to monitor sessions and to store information regarding users' activities. Cookies may contain codes that allow tracking of the user's browsing within the site itself for statistical or advertising purposes. Unlike cookies set by the website currently being visited, so-called third-party cookies are stored by websites or servers other than the one being visited and are used for the purposes and according to the methods defined by those parties. This is because every website may contain elements (images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages on other domains, etc.) that reside on servers other than that of the visited site. Some operations could not be carried out without the use of cookies, which are therefore technically necessary in certain cases for the operation of the site itself, while other cookies may be refused by the user without compromising the functionality of the visited website.

Types of cookies based on origin

As already mentioned, there are first-party and third-party cookies. "First-party" cookies are those whose domain matches the website, while "third-party" cookies refer to external domains. Third-party cookies are necessarily installed by an external party, always defined as a "third party", which is not managed by the website. These parties may also install first-party cookies by saving their own cookies under the website's domain.

Types of cookies based on nature

If we consider the nature of cookies, the Italian Data Protection Authority has divided them into two categories (within which there are various types of cookies): technical cookies and profiling cookies. Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of "carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide that service". In other words, they are cookies that are essential for the functioning of the site or necessary to perform activities requested by the user. Technical cookies include browsing or session cookies, which ensure normal browsing and use of the website, and functionality cookies, which allow the user to browse according to a number of selected criteria in order to improve the service provided. Profiling cookies are used to create profiles relating to the user and his or her browsing habits and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences shown by the user while browsing the web. The user's consent is not required for the installation of technical cookies, whereas for profiling cookies prior consent from the data subject must be requested and obtained. In the case of third-party cookies, the website does not have direct control over individual cookies and therefore cannot install or delete them directly. In these cases, the user can manage such cookies through browser settings, as explained below.

Analytics cookies (the most widely used are those related to Google's service of the same name) are a special case. Although the Italian Data Protection Authority has clarified that they are not in themselves technical cookies, it has also established that these cookies can be treated as technical cookies if used directly by the website operator to collect information, in aggregated form, about the number of users and how they visit the website. Skysupermarket, through the IP address anonymization technique, collects statistical data on website usage in aggregated and anonymous form, without collecting information on the user's identity or any personal data.

Types of cookies based on duration

Depending on their duration, determined by the expiry date or by the action of closing the browser, cookies can be divided into temporary or session cookies (session cookies) and permanent cookies (persistent cookies). The former are used to store temporary information, make it possible to link the actions performed during a specific session and are automatically deleted when the browser is closed. The latter are used to store information, such as a name and password for access, so that the user does not have to type them again every time he or she visits a specific website. These remain stored on the computer even after the browser has been closed, until a preset expiry date or manual deletion by the user.
