How to read the table

The RAM in the M20 is divided into 16K byte blocks. These blocks can be seen by the processor as existing at more than one logical address (<segment>Offset). Beside being at different locations, the M20 can treat Code or Instruction memory as different physical memory than Data memory. This means that within one segment, the processor can see up to 64K of Instruction memory and 64K of different, physical, Data memory.

This requires one to think about how the memory is being allocated and used. Instruction fetching is obvious but Instruction relative fetches are also from Instruction memory. All other fetch and store operation take place in Data memory. An example of how this can be used is in BASIC. The program loads BASIC, as Data, at <6>0000 but executes, as Instructions, at <1>0000, using the physical memory located on the mother board. BASIC can then use free areas of memory on the mother board for Data memory, where the BASIC's programs and Data are stored.

In the table below I try to organize the memory access so that a programmer can understand where and how different 16K blocks of RAM are located. The addresses on the left are those that the processor uses in code. The next line describes how that block is seen by the processor and the physical location of that block.

Ram Physical location:

  • DRAM1 = first slot from keyboard end
  • DRAM2 = second slot from keyboard end
  • DRAM3 = third slot from keyboard end
  • ROM0 = ROM
